CE opposes illegal acts

August 15, 2014

Chief Executive CY Leung says he opposes illicit means, such as the Occupy Central plan, to achieve universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election in 2017.

Mr Leung made the statement today after participating in the Alliance for Peace & Democracy’s signature campaign.

“Hong Kong is a law-abiding society and we have enough open channels for different views to be expressed.”

He said, as a member of the Hong Kong community, he wants to encourage universal suffrage but opposes any illegal means to gain it.

He said it will be an historic move if Hong Kong achieves this goal and it must be done in accordance with the Basic Law and National People’s Congress Standing Committee decisions.

He said the Government will promote communication between different sectors, including Hong Kong legislators and the Central Government.

The meeting between Legislative Council members and Central Government officials next week in Shenzhen will help both sides work together towards the implementation of universal suffrage in Hong Kong in 2017.
