Extending working life is an effective way to increase the workforce and utilise human resources, a Steering Committee on Population Policy meeting noted today.
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam chaired the committee’s 10th meeting during which members were also briefed on the Consultation on Extension of the Service of Civil Servants.
Members said a higher retirement age for new civil service recruits can serve as a model for other public and subvented organisations, and also private enterprises, encouraging them to defer their employees' retirement age or adopt flexible retirement arrangements.
Members also discussed youth employment and suggested tabling more measures to help youths better understand and develop multiple pathways.
They proposed that directions worth considering include strengthening employers' participation in the curriculum design of vocational education and the provision of internship opportunities, and better co-ordination of efforts by schools, social welfare organisations, training institutions and the business sector.
Such efforts can help youths who have decided not to pursue their studies to better understand themselves and their career aspirations, and enhance their employability, they said.
