CS urges lawmakers to vote on proposal
May 13, 2012
Chief Secretary Stephen Lam has reiterated that Legislative Council members that oppose the Government’s proposal to bar legislators who resign mid-term from taking part in by-elections for six months should allow the legislature to complete the debate and vote upon the proposal.
In a media session today, Mr Lam said the current term's proposal should be dealt with thoroughly and in a short space of time, so the next term of government can move on, and allow Hong Kong society to move on.
“Hong Kong is a progressive community, not stagnated at one particular point in time in our legislature,” he said.
Mr Lam said the Government fully respects the fact that there are political parties and individual members of legislature which hold different views on the proposed legislation regarding how vacancies in by-elections should be dealt with, but it is necessary for any society to continue to move ahead.
