Remuneration report submitted

May 09, 2012
The Independent Commission on Remuneration for Members of the Executive Council & the Legislature, & Officials under the Political Appointment System has submitted a report to the Government. Its contents will be released later this week.

Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Raymond Tam told the media today the committee suggested the monthly salary of political assistants should be set at $100,000, in response to public opinions the current level is too high. He said it is fair for the current-term government to handle the remuneration of the next-term government officials to avoid conflict of interest.

The Chief Executive appointed the commission in March last year to advise the Government on matters relating to the systems of remuneration for members of the Executive and Legislative Councils, and officials under the Political Appointment System.

The report said remuneration for the proposed posts of Deputy Chief Secretary and Deputy Financial Secretary in the next-term government, should be at a level between that of the Secretary for Justice and the Government Secretariat, which is about 1.75% higher than the Government Secretariat.

Mr Tam said the committee also reviewed the remuneration of the Government Secretariat, which has seen no adjustment since 2002.
