CE: Don't fear competition
October 17, 2011
Chief Executive Donald Tsang encourages young people not to fear competition from Mainland students and to have confidence in themselves and society.
Mr Tsang was addressing a group of students during a dialogue session on his 2011-12 Policy Address organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. The session was also broadcast live online.
He urged local students not to fear competition from the increasing numbers of Mainland students as they will only get better in the face of competition.
He said Hong Kong has faced many challenges and competitions from other places and Hong Kong won every time. The more open a society is, the lower its unemployment rate as some of the people coming into the city set up their own businesses, creating more jobs.
He said diligence and a fighting spirit are the keys to success and young people should not give up easily just because they are unsure about their future. They should have confidence in themselves and in society, he added.
During his long years of civil service, Mr Tsang said he has always been conscientious towards both Hong Kong people and himself, though he cannot expect everyone to agree with his policies.
When asked about the ongoing anti-capitalism demonstration in Central, Mr Tsang said he is glad to see young people responding to global issues, but urges them to abide by the law and not to disrupt social order.
