Customs seizes illicit cigarettes worth $3.4m
*
Customs & Excise Department

Customs officers have seized $3.4 million worth of duty-not-paid cigarettes with a duty potential of $2.18 million in Man Kam To and arrested a 36-year-old man.

At about 2pm yesterday, officers at Man Kam To Control Point stopped a loaded goods vehicle which was declared to contain "assorted cargoes". They arrested the driver when they found the duty-not-paid cigarettes.

The seized cigarettes had been sorted and packed, and could be speedily delivered for sale. Customs believes the illicit cigarette syndicate continues to use the "swift distribution" mode in an attempt to lessen the risk of being detected.

The driver has been charged with "importing unmanifested cargo" under the Import & Export Ordinance.
