Warning issued to drug traffickers

*

Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee has reiterated the Government's zero-tolerance attitude towards drug traffickers, assuring it will exert every effort to combat drug crime.

More than 1,000 drug-related crimes have been detected since Police began full-scale anti-drug operations in every district in June, arresting more than 1,300 people and seizing 80kg of drugs worth $50 million.

"Hong Kong will strengthen co-operation with the Mainland and foreign authorities to curb the flow of drugs into Hong Kong to prevent their afflicting our future generations," he said at the World Lions Service Day today.

Besides law enforcement, the Government will also expedite community mobilisation and support, and drug testing and rehabilitation to tackle youth drug problems and help addicted youth break the habit.

Mr Lee said the school drug testing trial scheme in Tai Po, which will be implemented next month, will boost students' rejection of drug offers and create a drug-free culture in schools. It will also motivate abusers to seek help and quit drugs.
