Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee has hailed the Government volunteer search and rescue team for their work in helping Sichuan earthquake victims.
Welcoming the team back to Hong Kong at the airport today Mr Lee said: "On behalf of the Chief Executive and the people of Hong Kong, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to you all for what you have done in assisting with the search and rescue work in areas affected by the earthquake.
"I am particularly impressed by the bravery and professionalism you have displayed in accomplishing this extremely difficult yet meaningful mission. I am also delighted to learn your hard work has won praise and recognition from the Sichuan Provincial People's Government."
The 43-member team led by Fire Services Department Senior Divisional Officer Tam Tai-keung included 34 firemen, six ambulancemen, a medical officer, a nurse and an information officer.
The team flew to Chengdu in two batches on May 15 and 16 and conducted search and rescue work in Hanwang, Mianzhu, one of the most devastated areas. The team recovered 24 bodies from the rubble of a collapsed office building and factory plants in the vicinity, and helped find a survivor trapped under a collapsed building.
Two fire officers with supplies were also sent to Sichuan on May 20 for logistical support, while the search and rescue team moved to Chengdu after the task in Hanwang was accomplished.
