Trio jailed for bribery scam
*
ICAC

A former dim-sum restaurant supervisor, a food supplier and his delivery worker have been jailed for bribery over food ingredients purchases.

The District Court heard that between March 1998 and January last year, 43-year-old Lai Chip-hoo accepted $147,000 from Shun Lung Food Company's Cheung Chi-foon and worker Cheung Kwok-fai as rewards for placing orders with Shun Lung and discarding excessive food ingredients ordered. Lai also offered $7,500 to a subordinate for aiding in the scam.

It also heard Cheung Chi-foon conspired with Cheung Kwok-fai to offer another association illegal rebates, amounting to $178,000, for placing orders to purchase dim sum or food ingredients from Shun Lung.

Judge Mary Yuen said custodial sentences were warranted in view of the seriousness of the offences.

Lai was sentenced to 18 months prison and ordered to pay $100,000 in restitution to his former employer. He had pleaded guilty to seven counts of accepting an advantage, and three of offering an advantage.

Cheung Chi-foon, 39, and Cheung Kwok-fai, 56, were jailed for 38 months and two years respectively.
