Chief Justice to decide on closed-door appeals
*

The Chief Justice will decide whether to make provisions enabling closed-door appeals on proscribing local organisations that endanger national security, says the Secretary for Security. The Chief Justice will also decide whether to hold proceedings in the absence of the appellant.

Speaking on a Metro Radio programme this morning, Regina Ip said the Government has made the provision under the National Security (Legislative Provisions) Bill after making references to similar provisions overseas, including Canada and the United Kingdom.

She added that the National Security Bill proposals are in line with international standards on human rights.

Responding to questions on whether to again amend provisions in the Basic Law, Mrs Ip pointed out that citizens are welcome to air their views and the Government will consider reasonable views put forward.

The Bill was gazetted today.
