New noise barriers based on contest designs
*

Winning design competition entries will be used to make Hong Kong's next generation of noise barriers, Director of Highways Wai Chi-sing says.

At the competition's prize presentation ceremony today Mr Wai said the contest has attracted world-class concepts for aesthetic design of noise barriers and enclosures which will greatly enhance the cityscape.

He said participants' creativity has encouraged Highways Department staff to think outside the traditional design framework.

The competition, the first of its kind conducted worldwide, has attracted participants from Hong Kong, the Mainland, South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, the UK and the US.

Head juror and renowned architect Richard Hawkins said the competition gave Hong Kong an opportunity to lead the world by showing how efficient transport systems can exist alongside buildings and public space with innovative and well-designed acoustic barriers.

A roving exhibition on the competition entries will start at Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, April 27 and 28, followed by Tuen Mun Town Plaza (May 4 to 7), Olympian City in Tai Kok Tsui (May 12 to 15), Tai Koo Shing Cityplaza South (May 16 to 19) and Tai Po Uptown Plaza (May 28 to 31).
