Pedestrian facility upgrades backed
*

The Transport Advisory Committee has endorsed the Government's proposal to improve the pedestrian environment in Causeway Bay, Mong Kok and Yuen Long.

After the committee's briefing today, chairman Teresa Cheng said the proposed schemes will minimise vehicle-pedestrian conflict and improve roadside air quality.

The schemes focus on improving the pedestrian environment in business districts, and around shopping centres and leisure areas with heavy pedestrian flow.

The Transport & Housing Bureau proposes constructing additional pedestrian subways in Causeway Bay linking the MTR station with Victoria Park, and busy streets in the heart of the popular shopping area with its junction with Happy Valley.

It also plans to extend Mong Kok's footbridges to Tai Kok Tsui and develop a footbridge system on Castle Peak Road in Yuen Long town centre.

Relevant departments will commission studies to examine the proposals in detail and conduct public consultations.
