A voluntary code of practice on handling complaints on nuisance calls generated by machines will be launched, the Office of the Telecommunications Authority says.
The code will serve as an interim measure to tackle junk calls before the proposed Unsolicited Electronic Messages Bill is enacted.
Under the code, telephone service providers may suspend or terminate the telephone lines of junk callers under the terms and conditions of the telephone service contract if two complaints are found substantiated.
Consumers can lodge complaints about junk calls made from machines to their service providers who can then investigate and take action. However, the code does not apply to promotional calls made by people.
