Harbour front options to stimulate discussion
*

The three ideas in the Wan Chai harbour front consultation digest are not proposals, but concepts devised to stimulate public discussion.

Sub-committee Chairman of the Wan Chai Development Phase II Review of the Harbour-front Enhancement Committee Leung Kong-yui said a preliminary list of sustainability indicators will be worked out for further discussion and endorsement by the public under the public engagement exercise launched on January 23.

"The objectives of the Harbour-front Enhancement Review project are to achieve a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable harbour-front at Wan Chai and adjoining areas and to satisfy planning, transport and infrastructural needs while ensuring the development phase two project complies with the Protection of the Harbour Ordinance," he said.

Public engagement

Committee members believe public engagement is vital to building a harbour-front for public enjoyment, and the review is designed for this purpose. It is hoped a consensus will be reached.

The committee will organise a roundtable meeting on February 5. All interested parties, especially those which have expressed views in public in the past few days, will be invited.

To ensure an open and inclusive engagement process, a number of organisations will be invited to take part in the review project as collaborators, including District Councils, community groups, business groups, green groups and academic and professional institutions.
