Eagle's Nest Tunnel works to begin

*
Highways Department

Construction of the Eagle's Nest Tunnel is set to begin this month after Director of Highways Mak Chai-kwong today signed a $1.84 billion contract with a joint venture between Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited and Kumagai Gumi Co, Ltd.

The tunnel forms part of a strategic route between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin. It is designed to improve the road capacity between Sha Tin and Kowloon to cope with future traffic demand generated by developments in the northeast New Territories and increased cross-boundary traffic.

The contractors will build a 2.1-kilometre dual three-lane Eagle's Nest Tunnel from Butterfly Valley to Shatin Valley, and associated electrical and mechanical and landscaping works.

The work is expected to be completed in April, 2007.
