Weather welcome: The HK Observatory will open to the public this weekend. | |
In 1879, the Royal Society recommended the Government establish an observatory in Hong Kong due to its favourable location for meteorology study. The Observatory was eventually inaugurated in 1883 with Dr William Doberck as the Government Astronomer.
Although Dr Doberck and his crew were tasked with collecting basic meteorological data, providing weather forecasts for the public was not on their original list of responsibilities.
They would not have anticipated their 21st Century successors would be responsible for providing weather information to major public bodies, commercial organisations and private individuals.
People who wish to revisit the Observatory's past and learn more about its development are invited to visit it this weekend.
The event will run from 9.30am to 4.45pm and admission is free.
