Hong Kong hopes to progressively expand air services with the Mainland.
Responding to a question from Eric Li in the Legislative Council today, Secretary for Economic Development & Labour Stephen Ip said enhancing air links between Hong Kong and the Mainland will reinforce and strengthen our competitive advantages as a leading international and regional aviation centre and logistics hub.
He said the provision of these air services is governed by the Mainland/Hong Kong Air Services Arrangement.
To further enhance Hong Kong's transport links with the Mainland, the Government has discussed the expansion of the arrangement since 2001. Any expansion requires agreement from both sides.
The arrangement provides a framework which is conducive to the development of air services between the two jurisdictions, he said, adding that the airlines designated by either side may operate services in accordance with the capacity and routes set out under the arrangement.
Discussions have resulted in an increased number of routes and capacity.
But Mr Ip believes there is still room for expansion of air services, and the Government will support Hong Kong airlines in developing these under the framework of the arrangement.
