Medical support promised for hijack victim

*

Wounded Manila hijack victim Jason Leung remains in stable condition in hospital, Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow says, pledging the Government will provide the best environment for his rehabilitation.

Dr Chow, Acting Chief Executive Henry Tang and other officials visited Mr Leung and his mother in Tuen Mun Hospital today. Mr Leung's fever has subsided and the pressure on his brain has eased, however, his rehabilitation will be long, Dr Chow said. The Government will continue helping the victim's family and provide the best care possible.

"Mrs Leung is calm and rational. She is taking it in stride and shows she is a strong person. Of course, she still needs a lot of support, I believe, from all of us, and I hope everybody can give her support," he said.

"Mr Leung is in a stable state and heavily sedated. Fortunately his fever has gone down and various infections [are] under control. He had a very serious injury and it is very difficult to predict the outcome at this moment. But whatever happens, he is going to face a very long and strenuous rehabilitation period. We are trying our very best to ensure he has the best treatment and the best environment for rehabilitation."

Tuen Mun Hospital's Chief of Service (Neurosurgery) Dr Dawson Fong said there are some small bone fragments embedded in Mr Leung's brain, but they have not caused much damage.

Dr Fong said Mrs Leung thanks the community for its support and encouragement.
