Instant noodles high in sodium, fat
*

The Consumer Council and Centre for Food Safety conducted a joint study of 48 instant-noodle samples, to scrutinise their sodium and fat contents based on the nutrition labels.

Thirteen of the package samples were found to contain sodium in excess of the World Health Organisation/Food & Agriculture Organisation's daily intake limit of less than 2,000mg - about 1 level teaspoon of salt. These samples were distributed almost evenly between cup noodles and instant noodles packs.

In general, instant noodles were relatively high in sodium content, up to 4,350mg in a 75g cup. Consumers are advised to limit the use of the seasoning provided, and drink less of the soup.

Three cup-noodle samples had more than 30g of total fat, or about two tablespoons of oil, per package - more than 50% of the daily total fat intake limit in a 2,000-calorie diet.

Nine samples - including five cups, three bags and a sauce-mixing type - contained at least 10g of saturated fat per package - at least 50% of the daily saturated fat intake limit in a 2,000-calorie diet.
