Legal action considered over tainted drug

*

The Department of Health is considering serving a summons to drug manufacturer Vickmans Laboratories after fungus was found its product Diurex.

The tablets were contaminated with a fungus called aspergillus, likely due to prolonged holding of the granules before tableting.

Director of Health Dr PY Lam said today the department is collecting evidence and has stopped Vickmans' operation, asking it to review its procedures and management. It may face a penalty such as licence suspension.

Expressing disappointment over the case Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow said he has asked the department to take action, adding there is no excuse for the trade not to check their products.

The Hospital Authority said 43,000 patients are taking the tablets. It will designate 15 hospitals for these patients to change the drug from May 6.

People can also call the department (2125 1122) or Vickmans (2596 1835) for enquiries.
