The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed the year's first Streptococcus suis infection involving a 56-year-old woman who handled raw pork at home.
She came down with fever and confusion on March 1 and was admitted to Queen Mary Hospital the next day. She is stable.
Six cases were reported last year. The figures for 2006 and 2007 were eight and six. Click here for more information on Streptococcus suis and its prevention.
