5th Streptococcus suis case confirmed
*
Centre for Health Protection

The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed this year's fifth case of Streptococcus suis infection, involving a 59-year-old Fanling man.

He has no recent travel history, but came down with fever and joint pain on August 19. He was admitted to North District Hospital on August 25 and his condition is stable. Investigations are continuing.

There were 13 Streptococcus cases last year. To prevent the disease, people should observe good hygiene practices and avoid contact with pigs. If contact with pigs or raw pork is necessary, use gloves, wash hands and clean and cover all wounds properly.

People with symptoms should consult their doctors as soon as possible and declare any possible exposure. More details on Streptococcus are available here.
