			 People should take extra precautions when hiking in remote areas or on non-managed trails, and hikers' organisations should exercise extra caution in organising outdoor activities, the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department says.

Commenting on recent hiking accidents today, the department said hikers should be well prepared for their excursions and travel with others. They should use well-managed and maintained trails in country parks. When exploring remote and non-designated trails, they should stay away from cliffs and avoid paths that may be slippery or vulnerable to flooding.

When hiking:
* take note of possible hazards and carefully plan the route before setting out;
* travel with company and do not overstretch your physical fitness;
* bring sufficient drinking water and sleep well on the night before the journey; and,
* watch for any changes in the surrounding environment and weather conditions, and have contingency plans arranged in advance.
