Another Streptococcus infection confirmed

HPC logo (Eng version)

The Centre for Health Protection has received a report of Streptococcus suis infection involving an 84-year-old man, bringing the total number of infections to 11 since May 2004.

The man, who lived in Sau Mau Ping, developed fever and right knee pain and was admitted to United Christian Hospital on June 16. He is now in stable condition.

He has no recent travel history and has not visited farms. He assisted in meal preparation but did not recall if he had handled raw pork before the illness. His home contacts did not have any symptoms.

The centre has contacted the patient, his family and hospital staff for further information. Health advice was given to the patient and his family.

The centre and the Hospital Authority are planning a study to look at the pattern of cases admitted to hospitals in the last two years.

People are advised to always observe personal and environmental hygiene and to avoid contact with pigs. If contact with pigs or raw pork is necessary:

* use protective gloves;

* wash hands after handling; and,

* clean and cover all wounds.

Click here or visit the Travellers' Health Service website for more information on Streptococcus suis.
