Safe swimming: The qualification required for private swimming pool lifeguards will be upgraded to enhance bathers' safety.

*

Private swimming pool lifeguard qualification requirements will be upgraded to better protect bathers. It will help ensure consistency in the qualification required for lifeguards working at both public and private pools.

A proposal to amend the Swimming Pools Regulation will be tabled to lawmakers in the coming legislative year.

Secretary for Home Affairs Dr Patrick Ho told legislators today four fatal accidents occurred at private pools between 2001 and May 31. They all took place this year, and involved three children and a sick bather. Two cases did not relate to the adequacy of life saving attendants, and the other two are under Police investigation.

On lifeguards at public swimming pools and beaches, Dr Ho said 991 rescue cases and 12 fatal cases have been recorded by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department. None were caused by deficiencies in the number of lifeguards. For details, click here.

The department regularly reviews lifeguard qualifications and has upgraded the Bronze Medallion to the Pool and Beach Lifeguard Awards.

To monitor and review safety standards and keep abreast of good practices overseas, a safety committee on aquatic venue management has been set up. Updated safety guidelines are issued from time to time to venue staff for implementation.
