Regulation revision set for medical devices
*
Department of Health

A revised proposal on the regulatory framework for medical devices will be tabled at the Legislative Council early next year.

This was the message today from the Department of Health in response to a Consumer Council survey which found that intense pulsed light and laser procedures, if not properly managed, can cause serious side effects and other complications.

The proposal will allow the Government to implement an administrative control system to pave the way for the longer-term enforcement of mandatory requirements.

The department will carefully consider comments from the industry and the public before presenting its revised proposal to legislators.

To safeguard health and safety, it proposed in a consultation document in July to limit the use or operation of certain high-risk devices, including high-power lasers and intense pulsed light devices.

It also proposed to restrict their use to trained personnel only. The Consumer Council supported the suggestion.

The department urged people to exercise discretion in their choice of service providers and seek professional advice whenever appropriate.
