Don't use unbranded X'mas lighting
*

For safety reasons, consumers are advised not to use Christmas lights that bear no product information, the Electrical & Mechanical Services Department warns.

During this festive season, the department has been inspecting Christmas lighting supply outlets. In general, it has found the light strings on the market generally comply with safety requirements.

However, inspections have also found that some unbranded Christmas light strings do not have adequate insulation and/or are fitted with two-pin plugs, which do not comply with the Electrical Products (Safety) Regulation.

Although there is no immediate danger associated with the use of these unbranded Christmas lights, they do not offer reliable protection, the department added.

Consumers are advised to buy Christmas light strings with appropriate product information, including brand name, model, rated voltage and power, symbol for Class II insulation, that is double or reinforced insulation, and warning notices, it added.
