The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department has been asked to conduct more thorough studies to assess the quality of waters around Hong Kong and review sterilisation of fish tank water to ensure the quality of live seafood.

Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong said today he had issued the request, assuring that his bureau will continue to co-ordinate Government departments in ensuring food safety.

He said an effective mechanism to sterilise fish tank water was needed because seawater could always contain microbes.

Dr Yeoh said with the unremitting efforts of the department and its Food & Environmental Hygiene colleagues, and the co-operation of seven other departments, the problem of illegal seafood wholesale activities on Aberdeen Promenade has been stopped, better protecting the public from consuming contaminated seafood.

Dr Yeoh called on the seafood trade and the public to observe stringent health standards for food.

The Fish Marketing Organisation meanwhile has issued a stern warning to three Aberdeen seafood wholesalers who were found keeping fish in the typhoon shelter by hanging cages.

Patrols will be stepped up at the market to ensure wholesalers comply with hygiene requirements.
