3 new cases, 2 healthcare workers died

*

Three new cases of SARS were confirmed today, and six more patients were discharged from hospital.

All three are healthcare workers of North District Hospital. There are now 1,310 patients who have recovered and been discharged.

Of the 87 cases still being treated in hospitals, 29 patients are in intensive care. Most patients are responding positively to the treatment protocol, and 64 are in convalescence waiting for discharge.

Four patients died in Prince of Wales, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Hospitals. This brings to 278 the total number of SARS deaths. They were two men and two women aged 55 to 65. All had a history of chronic disease.

There are 486 families under the home confinement programme, representing 1,237 people.

Two healthcare workers succumb to SARS

One of the fatalities was a private doctor Thomas Cheung who is believed to have contracted the virus from an infected patient. Dr Cheung, 58, was hospitalised on April 24 and confirmed to have SARS soon after. However, he did not respond well to treatment. He was the second private doctor succumbed to SARS.

Director of Health Dr Margaret Chan said contact tracing is being conducted, and so far 148 of the doctor's family members and patients have been reached and none have SARS symptoms.

A 53-year-old ward attendant Wong Kang-tai died tonight in Prince of Wales Hospital. Deeply saddened,Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa said she has displayed the highest level of selfless devotion and will be remembered by the whole community.

Health checks at Wing Shui House almost complete

Dr Chan said environmental samples taken from Wing Shui House in Lek Yuen estate have been testing negative for the virus, and no more residents have been found to have SARS symptoms. She said testing at the building will be able to stop on June 2 if no more cases are found by then.

Advice issued to tourists and tour sector

Dr Chan said that from today, health tips and guidelines will be posted on the department's website for tourists and tour operators.

"This is to take good care of our visitors to Hong Kong," Dr Chan said.

"It shows them how to minimise their chance of contracting SARS, and show them how to prevent importing and exporting the disease. It is important to instill confidence in visitors to Hong Kong. We want to make sure they have a happy trip to Hong Kong and a safe journey home."
