Atypical pneumonia

HK should resume normal life: Tung

Atypical pneumonia will co-exist with Hong Kong for a while, Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa said today, adding that people should resume their normal lives and remain vigilant.

During his visit to a secondary school in Lam Tin this afternoon, Mr Tung said the outbreak has stablised and that  the Government has gained a better understanding of the disease.

Role models: Tung Chee Hwa obeserves the preparation work of a secondary school for class resumption; Elsie Leung demonstrates how to clean our environment; and Henry Tang shows his support for the retail sector in Kowloon Tong.

The Government is now working hard in developing more effective medical treatment, enhancing boundary quarantine measures and stepping up preventive measures.

With the co-operation of the community, Mr Tung said Hong Kong will win the battle.

During today's visit, Mr Tung and Secretary for Education & Manpower Professor Arthur Li observed the school's preparation work for class resumption.

Meanwhile, the Hong Kong-wide Cleansing Campaign continued today, with a number of bureau secretaries actively taking part in district functions to arouse public awareness on environmental and personal hygiene.

Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung visited Tuen Mun this morning to participate in its cleansing activities and pay home-visits to the elderly.

She said it is important to get everyone involved in the cleansing campaign and disseminate the message of keeping Hong Kong clean to the whole community.

Secretary for Home Affairs Dr Patrick Ho visited Mong Kok, Tung Chung and Sha Tin. Speaking on the hygiene problem in Mong Kok alleys, he said the Government will tackle the issue in a number of ways including stepping up its enforcement and inspection.

Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology Henry Tang visited a shopping mall in Kowloon Tong where he and his family made a number of purchases in some shops and restaurants.

The Government understands that many sectors have been seriously affected by the atypical pneumonia outbreak, Mr Tang said, adding that alleviation measures will be announced shortly.

Meanwhile, Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Stephen Lam also showed his support of the campaign by joining cleansing activities in Wong Chuk Hang and Whampoa Garden, Hung Hom.
