49 patients admitted, 46 discharged
*

As at 1pm today, 49 new patients with atypical pneumonia symptoms were admitted to public hospitals. A total of 215 patients - about 20% of the total number of cases - have recovered from atypical pneumonia and have been discharged from public hospitals. Of them, 46 were sent home today.

The new patients include three healthcare workers (two from Kwong Wah Hospital and one from Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital) and another 11 patients from Amoy Gardens. The remaining 35 were new patients and contacts of patients with atypical pneumonia.

Almost a third of the total number of cases are from Amoy Gardens. About a quarter are healthcare workers.

Most of the patients currently in hospital are showing positive responses to the new treatment protocol, a combination of the anti-viral drug Ribavirin and steroids.

Of the 858 patients still in hospital, 120 - less than 15% - are receiving treatment in the intensive-care unit.

Three patients died in Princess Margaret Hospital last night and early this morning, bringing to 35 the total number of deaths relating to atypical pneumonia.

Two of the deceased, a man and woman, aged 39 and 35 respectively, had been admitted in serious condition and required immediate ICU treatment. A 67-year-old man who had a history of chronic disease also died. This represents a mortality rate of  3.15%.

Deputy Director of Health Lam Ping-yan said the Government would post the list of buildings in which atypical pneumonia patients normally reside and/or work on the Atypical Pneumonia website later tonight.
