$1.8m granted to aid disaster victims

*

Over $1.8 million will be donated by the Government to aid earthquake casualties in Xinjiang and drought victims in Eritrea in northeast Africa.

A grant of $921,000 from the Disaster Relief Fund has been approved for the Jian Hua Foundation to provide emergency aid to earthquake victims in Xinjiang's Uygur Autonomous Region.

Another Disaster Relief Fund grant of $900,000 has been approved for the Cedar Fund to provide emergency assistance to Eritrea.

Both grants were made on the recommendation of the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee.

To ensure the money will be used for the designated purposes, the two bodies will submit evaluation reports and audited accounts after their relief projects have been completed.

Two other applications for grants to provide relief to the Xinjiang earthquake victims are being processed.
