Green fund to nurture new technology
*

Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau hopes the $300 million Pilot Green Transport Fund will attract car manufacturers, universities, and science research and development institutions to work with Hong Kong's transportation providers to develop green technology.

Speaking on a radio talk show today, Mr Yau said the green transport fund proposed in the Financial Secretary's 2010-11 Budget will not be used to directly subsidise bus companies to buy eco-friendly buses.

He said the purpose of fund is to encourage manufacturers and institutions to work with transportation companies to test the green technologies which can be used widely in the community, benefiting both the industries and the general public.

The fund can also be used to further develop green technologies already being tested but it will not be used to directly subsidise bus companies to buy eco-friendly buses.

He also urged electricity companies to work with private property management on the installation of chargers for electric vehicles.
