Last month was cloudier and wetter than usual, with 136.8 hours of bright sunshine - 15.6 hours below the normal figure - and a monthly rainfall of 51 millimetres, more than double the 23.4mm average.
Although the monthly mean temperature of 15.8 degrees was normal, the mean maximum temperature of 13.4 degrees during the cold spell from January 19 to 27 was the lowest for the same period of the year since 1947.
A surge of winter monsoon brought some light rain on January 10. As it stopped the next day, mainly fine weather returned but it became progressively cooler.
On January 12, the first cold weather warning of the year was issued and the temperature fell below 12 degrees the next morning. The weather remained mainly fine and cool on January 14 and 15.
A cold front crossed the South China coast on January 16 and brought some rain patches. The weather became mainly fine again the next day.
Record cold weather warning issued
Hong Kong was affected by the winter monsoon on January 18. It triggered a cold weather warning from the evening of January 18 to noon on January 27.
The length of the warning - 204 hours and 45 minutes - set a new record since the cold weather warning system was introduced in 1999.
The lowest temperature of the month was 8 degrees recorded on January 21. It was also the third lowest on record for Lunar New Year's Eve.
It was cold again on the morning of January 28. The weather became milder on January 29 as the northeast monsoon weakened.
It was misty with some light rain patches on January 30 under light wind conditions. Winds strengthened from the east overnight and the weather remained cloudy on the last day of the month.
