Enhanced co-operation: Canadian Minister of Environment David Anderson and Secretary for Environment, Transport & Works Dr Sarah Liao renew the MOU on Environmental Collaboration. |
|
Extended operating hours are being considered for the KCRC East Rail service to cope with the expected tourist upsurge during the National Day holiday.
Secretary for Environment, Transport & Works Dr Sarah Liao said the idea is possible, however the Government and related parties will need to make a number of arrangements to facilitate the extension.
Bridge alignment carefully considered
On the environmental assessment of the HK-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, Dr Liao said work started last year when the Government began looking at the bridge alignment.
"We want to make sure that from our side, we are choosing an alignment which has the least impact on the overall environment," she said.
"For us and the Mainland, both will go through the required legal procedures according to the laws of the two places. Although we will have a joint group which will share data and we will have to consider the cumulative effect on both sides, the legal process has to be separated."
Environmental MOU signed
Dr Liao today signed a renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Collaboration between Hong Kong and Canada.
The 2003 MOU covers collaboration in the following areas:
* sustainable development;
* greenhouse gas emissions control;
* toxic air contaminants and their control;
* integrated pollution control;
* economic instruments for environmental protection;
* environmental management systems;
* strategic environmental assessment,
* wildlife conservation;
* waste management; and,
* other environmental technologies.
This is the second renewal of the MOU since it was first signed in 1992 to enhance collaboration in the area of environmental affairs. The first renewal was signed in 1998.
