Rain intensity radar pictures now online!

Rainfall

Weather check: Radar pictures showing rainfall distribution and intensity are now available online.

The HK Observatory is posting radar pictures of rain intensity on its website. On trial since July, the feature has received good feedback from the public and become a top feature of the site.

Different colours represent rain intensity, and the picture is normally updated every 12 minutes. It covers a 250-km radius from Hong Kong, encompassing most of Guangdong and the northern South China Sea.

Observatory Assistant Director Dr BY Lee said the radar pictures will enable people to make weather-sensitive decisions to suit their own circumstances.

For example, they can decide whether to proceed with outdoor activities in light of the intensity and distribution of rain appearing on the radar picture.

However, he warns that the interpretation of radar pictures is not straightforward, particularly if the viewer is not aware of atmospheric conditions and the way the radar is operated.

Those seeking to make good use of radar and satellite pictures are encouraged to sign up for training courses.

The first course was held early this month, and those interested can now apply to attend the second course on August 30 and September 6.
