$100m fund to boost sustainable development
*

The Council for Sustainable Development will seek $100 million from the Legislative Council's Finance Committee on June 13 to set up a fund to boost public understanding of the need to balance economic development and environmental conservation.

The Sustainable Development Fund will also be used to encourage community participation in discussing Hong Kong's long-term sustainable development.

Speaking after the council's meeting today, Chief Secretary for Administration Donald Tsang, who also heads the council, revealed that a sustainable-development strategy will be devised in 18 months for public consultation.

He said the council's vision is to make Hong Kong a healthy and environmentally vibrant society that respects nature and values its cultural heritage.

By engaging the entire community, Hong Kong will be a city for all to share and enjoy, for this and for future generations, he added.
