Customs' kudos: Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department Assistant Director Lay Chik-chuen presents the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora certificate of commendation to Customs & Excise Department officers. |

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora in Geneva has commended the Customs & Excise and Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Departments for their exemplary action in combating illegal ivory exports.
During an operation in October, 506 kilograms of ivory was seized and the would-be trader was handed a 16-month prison sentence.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong is the first recipient of the Convention's Secretary-General's Certificate of Commendation, which was introduced last year to recognise exemplary enforcement action.
The Secretary-General attributed the successful enforcement action to the excellent co-operation between the departments, and viewed this as a deterrent to those who are tempted by the illegal trade in endangered species.
The Government said it is honoured to be the first recipient of the award, and said Hong Kong will continue its efforts to combat illegal trade in endangered species.
Hong Kong has a long history of commitment to the implementation of the convention. The Animals & Plants (Protection of Endangered Species) Ordinance was enacted in 1976.
The Endangered Species Protection Liaison Group also combines the expertise of the two departments and the Police in curbing illegal trade in endangered species.
