33 nominations for education council
*

The Education Bureau has received a total of 33 nominations for the eighth election to the Council on Professional Conduct in Education, comprising 17 teacher-nominated seats and 16 organisation-nominated seats.

The Permanent Secretary for Education will appoint the Principal Education Officer (Professional Development & Training) and two lay members to the council, bringing the total number of members to 24.

Voting for teacher-nominated categories will take place at schools on April 22. All serving regular registered teachers, permitted teachers and government school teachers are eligible to vote.

For the organisation-nominated categories, eligible education organisations will be asked to submit their votes before 10am on April 24. Election procedure details will be sent to schools and education organisations.

Background

The council, set up by the Education Department in 1994, is a non-statutory body to advise the Director of Education on promoting professional conduct in education. It draws up operational criteria defining the conduct expected of an educator and advises, where necessary, on cases of disputes or alleged professional misconduct.

It aims to enhance the image and professionalism of teachers and to attract more high-calibre young people into the teaching profession.
