A team of 28 secondary school students has won six first, nine second and nine third prizes for Hong Kong at the 3rd Pan-Pearl River Delta Physics Olympiad.
It is the most outstanding achievement by a Hong Kong team at the event. The previous best result was in 2005, when the team won five first, one second and 10 third prizes.
The contest was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad Committee and the Chinese Society of Education Physics Teaching Professional Commission to promote physics education and provide challenging learning opportunities for gifted Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan youths.
The Olympiad was held simultaneously at the Fung Hon Chu Gifted Education Centre in Hong Kong and Shenzhen Secondary School Monday. There were 358 top secondary students joining the contest, with 289 from the secondary schools of nine provinces on the Mainland and the rest from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
The 28 Hong Kong participants are trainees of the Education & Manpower Bureau's Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme Physics Enhancement Programme. They were selected to partake in a series of enhancement courses as they achieved outstanding performances in the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad 2006.
