40,000 people join English festival
*

The English Festival organised by the Standing Committee on Language Education & Research has marked a successful return this year with nearly 40,000 participants, almost doubling last year's figure.

Speaking after the festival's closing ceremony today, SCOLAR Chairman Michael Tien said the figures prove again that the committee's efforts in creating an English language environment outside the classroom has been well-received. He was also impressed by the dedication and passion shown by the language teachers.

Chris Wardlaw, Deputy Secretary for Education & Manpower, and Stephen Chan, English Festival 2006 Organising Committee Chairman officiated at the ceremony.

An 'English tree was unveiled at the event to display the winning articles of the creative writing competition. It will be part of a roving exhibition at schools, the Central Library and other venues from June. For the exhibition schedule, please refer to the English Festival website.
