Legislative Council President Rita Fan
President's choice: Legislative Council President Rita Fan is guest host of the first episode of the TV programme "English Festival 2006 - A Bookworm's Choice".
*

Well-known personalities from all walks of life will recommend interesting English books to young readers in a television programme commissioned by the Standing Committee on Language Education & Research.

Titled "English Festival 2006 - A Bookworm's Choice", the TV programme is a new initiative of the committee's "English Festival 2006" to introduce quality books and promote English reading.

Committee Member Stephen Chan said there is a strong correlation between a student's reading habits and his or her motivation for language learning and achievement in language subjects.

"The more a student reads, the more likely he or she will attain higher language competence. Therefore, we put in great efforts in promoting reading," Mr Chan said.

People who will appear in the show include Rita Fan, Linus Cheung, Eleanor Morris, Lu Kwong-fai, Alice Yuk, Dr Rebecca Lee, Dr Lo Wing-lok, Jasper Tsang, Ko Ting-lung, Professsor Cheng Kai-ming and Alan Leong.

Starting from April 6, the programme will be broadcast on ATV Home at 3.45pm every Tuesday and Thursday, and re-run at 10.45am every Friday.
