Enrolment has started for government-subsidised training courses for the medical and healthcare sector under the Skills Upgrading Scheme, to be launched at the end of this month.

Introducing the courses at a briefing today, the scheme's medical and healthcare industry working group convenor Prof Leung Ping-chung said the courses will provide focused skills training for frontline healthcare workers, clinic nurses and Chinese medicine employees.

The courses aim to improve the workers' professional skills and healthcare knowledge, and enhance the industry standard as a whole.

The Education & Manpower Bureau has set aside about $4.7 million to subsidise the training costs, to improve the skills of more than 6,200 in-service workers, he said.

Hong Kong Doctors Union and Hong Kong Medical Association's Dr Yeung Chiu-fat said 262 classes will offer 28 different courses.

Subjects include nursing care in hospitals and clinics, medical ethics, occupational safety, infection control, basic training in Western and Chinese medicine usage as well as medicine control management.

Generic subjects also on offer

Generic subjects including vocational English and Mandarin, computer software application and clinic management will also be offered, he said.
