Subcontractor registration set to start
*

The Provisional Construction Industry Co-ordination Board will launch the Voluntary Subcontractor Registration Scheme on November 26.

The scheme will help safeguard construction quality, improve supervision and strengthen self-regulation in the industry.

The board's Working Group on Management of Subcontracting chairman Russell Black said the scheme's first phase covers 41 trades, including common structural, civil, finishing as well as electrical and mechanical works.

Registration is simple. Any subcontractor who has completed at least one job within the last five years, or has acquired comparable experience will be eligible.

Those who are listed on relevant Government registration schemes will also be allowed to join.

Registration will be suspended or revoked in the event of serious misconduct by subcontractors, such as conviction of corruption or wage arrears.

Upgrading the industry

"The scheme aims to build up a pool of capable and responsible subcontractors with specialised skills and a high standard of professional ethnics," Mr Black said.

Names of registered subcontractors will be posted on a new website accessible to key industry stakeholders.

The board will consider the industry's feedback when drawing up plans for phase two, and reviewing the need for mandatory registration.

For enquiries, contact the Registration Office on 3107 0698, fax 3107 0699, or email enquiry@pcicbvsrs.com.hk.
