The education sector should shoulder the responsibility of promoting national education.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the China Fortnight today, Secretary for Education & Manpower Professor Arthur Li said the sector is encouraging students to know more about the motherland and national identity during the National Day holiday period.
He said the Education & Manpower Bureau fully supported the work at policy level.
"This will enhance our youngsters' affection for our country and cultural tradition as well as their willingness to fulfil their responsibilities and contribute their efforts to the motherland," he said.
The policy was implemented in the primary and secondary school curricula, with adequate resources and teaching materials being provided to schools and teachers.
Organised by the bureau from today to October 3, the China Fortnight features an exhibition, celebrity and subject talks and an experience-sharing seminar.
Professor Li said experience sharing at the talks will enable such educational activities to be presented in an interesting and creative way so young people will become aware of their national identity and feel proud of it.
Meanwhile, five schools, together with the Chinese Culture on Net Foundation, Association of HK Flag Guards, and the Leisure & Cultural Services Department, will participate in the exhibition to be held at the HK Teachers' Centre, 4 Pak Fuk Road, North Point, from tomorrow to October 3.
Themes of their displays will focus on the promotion of national education through various activities at schools, such as cross-curricular and whole-school approaches, interflow with mainland schools and organisations, and production of a wall mosaic map of China.
