A Secondary Six Pui Ching Middle School student has won a bronze medal for Hong Kong at the Second China Mathematical Olympiad for Girls in Wuhan.
Some 33 teams from 24 Mainland cities, including Hong Kong, participated in the competition held August 25 to 29, and hosted by the China Mathematical Society Olympiad Committee and co-organised by the Wuhan Education Bureau.
Tse Ting, 17, was part of the Hong Kong Kong team comprising 12 talented Secondary Four to Seven schoolgirls selected from the beneficiaries of the Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme.
The scheme is organised by the Education & Manpower Bureau to provide structured enhancement programmes in science, mathematics, leadership and interpersonal skills to help develop the potential of participants.
The Olympiad aimed to foster girls' interest in mathematics and open up a new arena for advancement through competitions and interaction with other talented students.
It also offered valuable opportunities for the Hong Kong contestants to get better acquainted with the Mainland through learning and interacting with their peers from different provinces. These experiences help boost their sense of national identity.
Sponsored by the Sheen Hok Charitable Foundation of Hong Kong, the Olympiad saw participants from Beijing, Shanghai, Harbin, Shenyang, Dalian, Changchun, Shijiazhuang, Qingdao, Hangzhou, Ningpo, Fuzhou, Nanchang, Zhenzhou, Wuhan, Changsha, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanning, Haikou, Mianyang, Xian, Lanzhou, Urumqi and Hong Kong. The only overseas team was one from the Philippines.
Details of the event can be found on the homepage of the Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme.
