$910m in work injury compensation paid in '02

*
Labour Department

Work injury compensation paid to employees or their family members hit $910 million last year.

Speaking at the Occupational Safety & Health Awards 2003 presentation ceremony this afternoon, Permanent Secretary for Economic Development & Labour Matthew Cheung said industrial accidents not only hurt workers and their families, but also cause great financial loss to society.

Remarkable improvement has been made in recent years to occupational safety with accidents falling 12.5% from 53,000 in 2001 to 47,000 in 2002.

The number of construction accidents has fallen 32.2% from 9,200 in 2001 to 6,200 in 2002.

However, there is no room for complacency in occupational safety, Mr Cheung said, adding that enterprises and companies should enhance their safety management system and foster a culture of occupational safety among their staff.
