Skills upgrade

*
Construction workers skills to be registered
*

A Government proposal would see an official registration system for construction workers, aimed at raising their status.

A bill will be introduced to the Legislative Council on March 19 and the system is expected to be implemented one year after its passage.

Under the proposal, all construction workers will be required to register according to their skill levels.

Those who have trade test certificates or equivalent documents may apply for registration as registered skilled workers or registered semi-skilled worker for individual designated trades.

Other workers with simple job-related skills may seek registration as registered general workers.

A one-off provision will be included to allow senior workers to seek registration as registered skilled workers by passing an assessment interview.

Other workers with stipulated experience but without the relevant qualifications will also be allowed to seek registration as registered skilled or semi-skilled provisional workers.

Registered construction workers will have to complete short development courses to renew their registrations every three years.

They are not required to attend trade tests at renewal except those trades specified under existing ordinances.
