| Poll recap: Electoral Affairs Commission chairman Justice Woo Kwok-hing (centre) and members Norman Leung and Elizabeth Shing meet the media on election results. |

Counting continued through the night at the Hong Kong International Trade & Exhibition Centre, ending just after noon today. The term of office for the newly elected Legislative Council members will begin on October 1 and last for four years.
After the final results were announced, Electoral Affairs Commission Chairman Justice Woo Kwok-hing said it took less time to count the ballots this year - about 13 hours - than it did in 2000.
In the last LegCo elections, it took about 14 hours to count only 1.3 million votes for geographic constituencies. This year, it took about an hour less to count 1.78 million votes - even though the ballots for the Hong Kong Island Geographic Constituency and the Accountancy Functional Constituency had to be recounted.
"If these two recounts had not been required, the time would have been much shorter," Justice Woo said.
He credited streamlined procedures for handling ballots in question and the conversion of voting stations into counting stations for the time savings.
The ballot-box design will be reviewed, and a report will be submitted to the Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa in three months' time, he said.
"Overall, the election was conducted in a fair, open and honest fashion," he added.
