Road permit validity extended

December 10, 2025

The Transport Department announced today that, starting from January 1, all applications submitted for a Closed Road Permit for cross-boundary vehicles will be issued with a longer validity period.

The aim is to better align with the validity period of cross-boundary permits, or up to 60 months, whichever is shorter. This will provide additional convenience and efficiency for cross-boundary travel as permit holders need not apply for annual renewals.

Additionally, from the same day, permit fees will also be adjusted based on the cost-recovery principle.

For applications received on or before December 31, the validity period of permits issued will remain no more than 12 months, and permit fees will be kept at existing levels.

To streamline processes, from January 1 cross-boundary private cars permitted to use more than one land-based boundary control point will be issued with a single permit covering all boundary control points concerned.
